Secret Rome: Trastevere Undergrounds Walking Tour
Discover a Secret Rome buried under Churches, descent 7 meters (20ft) under the street level to explore this well preserved Underground Churches, Roman Houses and Crypts, away from the crowds in the trendy Trastevere district.
Trastevere is one of Rome’s oldest and better preserved neighbourhood, here alleyways, lanes, churches as well as old traditional bakeries and shops, will be a pleasant, relaxed and authentic experiences of Rome. The tour starts from the Church of San Crisogono, which was built in the late Middle Ages and now has the appearance of a typical roman baroque church. Hidden in its undergrounds there are well visible traces, with various frescoes, of the original basilica of the 5th century. We will descend 20 feet under the street level to discover the old walls and structures, the frescoes from the 5th to the 12th century as well as many inscriptions and sarcophagi in a unique journey through history.
Then we will walk through the hidden lanes of Trastevere to reach the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere to visit the beautiful baroque church, the walls and the decoration, mosaics, shrines, columns of the roman houses of Saint Cecilia’s family. Here many rooms and even the granary are preserved almost intact. This tour is a unique chance to discover Rome’s hidden treasures away from the mass tourism routes.

The Secret Undergrounds of Baroque Rome Walking Tour
Discover a Secret Rome buried right Under the Marvels of Baroque Rome: descent 7 meters (20ft) under the street level to explore this well preserved Houses, Aqueducts and a the Roman Stadium of Domitian.
Everyone knows the famous Trevi Fountain but less known is the underground route that extend underneath: with a journey going back to the time we can see the millenary stratification of the historical centre of Rome and we will have the possibility to observe the archaeological evidence of the great events that characterised the story of the city: from the Nero great fire to the realisation of the Acqua Virgo, from the sack of Alarico to the Gothic invasion.
We will follow the path of the Ancient Aqueduct and discover its well preserved remains underneath a flashy brand new shopping mall and in a humble alley. Our walk will touch some of the key attractions of Rome like the House of Parliament and the Pantheon, before a quick break for an ice cream or a drink. We will eventually reach one of the most famous squares of Rome that inherit its particular shape to the previous Stadium of Domitian where some ancient structure were found by the end of 1800: stairs, furnaces and lateritious arcades under the square. We will also go along the two thousand years of history of this area from Domitian to the Middle Age, from Pamphilij to the demolition projects of XX century.
