Recently, we have started to organise some open tours, where you can join a group of others for a secret tour of Rome.
During the Dark Ages, when there were barely 20,000 inhabitants, buildings were left without being maintained and became run down. Earthquakes, floods and over time the ancient buildings became covered in 20 or 30 feet of mud and rubble.
From the first millennium AD, the Renaissance, medieval and modern Rome were built over the ruins of the Roman buildings. Sometimes recycling the old structures, but mostly just building on top, ignoring what was underneath.
Today hundreds of crypts, rooms, fountains, houses, temples and tombs are still perfectly persevered underground. It is a unique treasure not open to everyone, but a visit to Rome which does not include these sites would be like missing one of Rome’s most attractive and interesting aspects.
