Venice has been an inspiration for many writers, poets and artists over the years and it has still managed to maintain a constant number of visitors with its unique charm.
Although a decaying beauty, Venice has remained a singular wonder. There are secrets and treasures to discover in this awe-inspiring city.
With 150 canals, and 409 bridges, Venice is built on 117 small islands, walking is the greatest way to see the city and experience all that Venice has to offer.
Venice has many sites to see and experiences to take part in. The Grand Canal (Canal Grande) is best seen by vaporetto (a waterbus) that powers up and down the Canal, viewing the amazing parade of buildings, unique to Venice.
Close to the canal is San Marco, St Mark’s Square, a busy area of Venice, it is a great place to start from with the iconic basilica and Procuratie Vecchie and Nuovo. St Mark’s Basilica is an incredible of architectural styles, mixing Byzantine with Romanesque and Renaissance. The inside of the Basilica is a glittering array of mosaics and marble pavement.
The Palazzo Ducale, was the doges’ residence but also the government and prisons. The white stone and pink marble create a unique and splendid building, restored by Antonio da Ponte, who designed the Ponte di Rialto.
With different areas of Venice island, there is plenty to discover. With Churches in San Marco and San Polo, the Accademia and Guggenheim collection in Dorsoduro and the peaceful lanes of Cannaregio.
Outside of the Venice there are the islands of Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for glass making, after bringing the secrets of the art back from the East. Burano is the island of lace making. A pretty fishing village, famous for its colourful pastel houses.
Venice has no cars, so the water or by foot is the only way to get around. Gondola rides are the romantic image of Venice and are available all over the city. Walking tours with The Grand Tour will help you to discover the history, explore the alleyways and experience the atmosphere with a local guide.
